Abnormal is the New Normal

I try to stay read up on pop culture and I try to watch (at least once) anything that is popular on T.V. I do this so I can better engage our society. I’ve learned many things doing this. One thing is that what is right and wrong; normal and abnormal has always been measured by society using a sliding ruler. What was looked down on or thought weird (abnormal) 20 or 30 years ago is just fine or the norm now. I think some would blame this on our post-modern mindset but this has been the case since time has been recorded. The only norm is change so that is why it is very refreshing to this believer that the Bible is the same it was 2000 years ago and will be the same 2000 years in the future (if Jesus hasn’t returned by then).

The best way to measure anything (distance, height, depth, etc) is by using a fixed or permanent point. The best way to measure what is right and wrong or what is considered normal or abnormal should be measured by the Bible (or the Standard) since it has not or will not change. That is where the Christian mindset (or worldview) differs to that of the Worldly mindset (or worldview). The worldly mindset is what is right for me can be difference for you or what you see is wrong, can be right for me. That is not at all the mindset of Christ. What the Bible says is right is right and what it says is wrong is wrong.

There are many examples I can use to show the change of what used to be considered wrong is now okay. The one I like to use is homosexuality. Paul writes in Romans that God sees this as abnormal; men desiring to be with men not wanting to be with women. Our society now says its okay to be gay or even experiment with it. I use homosexuality because when Christian men think of it they think it’s the worse sin in the world but as I have written before, sin is sin is sin. There is no degree in sin. The Bible spokes of a sin that can destroy and that we should avoid but it’s “the okay sin” of each church; the sin of gossip. In God’s eyes, the sin of homosexuality and gossip are equally bad and equally destructive. But gossip is very rarely ever spoken against in today’s pulpits but homosexuality is hit hard.

Even if our society says something is normal, we as God’s people should go with what the Bible says. If the Bible says something is sin; it is sin. At the same time, if the Bible does not call it sin; it’s not sin. There are somethings that some churches call sin or abnormal that the Bible never addresses. For such topics, we should follow what the Holy Spirit is showing us and not go with what a person’s opinion is. The Bible is the ultimate authority and not man.
